My Top Essentials for Potty Training

As parents we enjoy the growth and development of our children: sitting up, crawling, holding their bottles, crawling, walking, and oh the joy of potty training. Even though some of these milestones can be frustrating as they are learning, we still do our best to guide them.

We started potty training my little one when she turned two, which was earlier this year. We have tried different techniques from sticker charts and setting the alarm on my phone for every 30 minutes, but I have learned some important things on our journey that have helped keep us sane in the process.

1) Patience

Remember that toddlers will do things on their timing. You will also find a technique that is right for your family.

2) Consistency

It is important to remain consistent to help them get the idea of going potty in their mind.  I am guilty of not being consistent and my toddler definitely is not consistent, lol.

3) Huggies Pull-Ups or Pampers Easy Ups

I prefer Pull-Ups because they come apart at the sides and it is easier for on the go.  Pampers Easy Ups will help them with pulling undergarments up and down.

4) Wipes

Make sure to have plenty-along with tissue. We use Huggies, but also some store brands when we run out, but we also remember to be considerate of any sensitivity to certain brands.

5) Toddler Potty

I was blessed to be provided with one by Leena’s early intervention specialist. She enjoys having her own little potty.

6) Toddler Toilet Seat

This was the turning point for us. Leena loves that she can sit on the big potty. She has been going more consistently and the clean up is easier.

7) Potty Training Books

Be sure to include potty training books in your children’s library. One’s with sound are awesome too! Leena loves the sounds.

8) Step Stool

This comes in handy for hand washing, brushing teeth, and getting on the toilet.

9) Last but not least, remember to breathe and try to have fun.

Some days you have to go with the flow.  There will be times that your toddler will not want to use the potty and that’s okay. It is still a process and they will get there.

We would love to hear your potty training stories.  Feel free to share with us in the comments.
