Parenting-Let’s Make a Game of It By Karen Thurm Safran -Book Review

Thank you Karen for the opportunity to review your book. My opinion of this book is my own.

Synopsis

I am glad that I am continuing to have the opportunity to read non-judgmental parenting books.  Parenting can be fun at times even in stressful moments.

Karen does an awesome job of sharing techniques to making frustrating moments into a game.

She breaks the book down in five parts: Ugh, My Child Won’t Cooperate; Oh No My Child is Distressed; Uh-Oh, My Child is Bored; Yeeks, Everything is Overwhelming; and Oh Yeah, Live Life to the Fullest. Each section is filled with short stories of examples of having fun while parenting.

These three are just a few of my favorites from the book.

1) A Playful Let’s Keep the House Neat Unpacking Game-Using Music to Make Chores Fun.

I will definitely keep this one in mind because my daughter loves music.

2) Ooh, Where Do You Want to Go?-Engaging Kids While Walking to the Airport Gate

This was a fun game. Once we start traveling more I will remember to do something like this.

3) How Long Before Our Turn?-Making a Game of Waiting in Lines

Oh how I could have used this when we were at a library book sale waiting in those long lines with my toddler.

The book is filled with many more incredibly fun ways to distract from the madness that may be happening at the moment with our children or getting them to complete tasks. Most of all, I love how Karen ends the book with reminding us to take time to cherish life. She also includes free materials to use in the book.

My Thoughts

As parents we try our best to remain calm when our children are distressed, acting out for whatever reason or when we need them to do certain things. We know that it is not always easy to stay level headed. Sometimes we become stressed too and need ways to calm the situation.  Children respond well to play, and this book gives techniques on how to incorporate fun games in different scenarios.

I found this book very encouraging, especially with helping me think outside the box with my two-year-old.  It is very challenging right now with these terrible twos, but I have found myself trying to redirect her energy or frustration, and hearing her laughter and excitement when playing soothes us both.

I recommend that you add this book to your parenting collection to help make parenting fun.
