Synopsis
Come sit with Baboon under a tree as he beats his drum and watch as he helps other animals and himself realize the importance of community and dream again.
In this wonderful fable Baboon, although moody, helps the other animals in the African Savanna on a path of life lessons with the secret he has discovered. The savannah has turned dry and desolate. The animals are hungry, miserable, and mean and no longer believed in their dreams. Baboon sits under a tree and notices Rhino racing to find a new patch of grass to eat, and in this patch was Beetle. Rhino demands Beetle move, but trips and destroys Termite’s castle in the process. Who does he blame? Beetle, of course. Baboon sets him straight and tells him it’s his fault. Beetle shows kindness to Rhino by offering a ball of mud, which will be used in other helpful and thoughtful ways throughout the book, to help with Rhino’s pain of his rump. This one act of kindness sets off a chain of interactions that lead the animals to helping one another and building their community.
“We can! We Believe!”
My Thoughts
This was a fun and very enjoyable read. My daughter and I got caught up in the story and loved the song the animals sung together.
Love Big is a well-written and beautifully illustrated book that encourages children and adults the importance of realizing the power within and around us, and the importance of being there for each other with kindness, sharing, listening, and care.
